How to clean black mold in closet and save clothes?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Jumeirah, and it feels a bit damp to the touch. I'm really worried it's spread to our clothes and might be causing my allergies to act up. What's the best way to clean this ourselves, and should we be throwing out all the items stored in that closet?

That damp patch on your exterior wall is classic condensation mould, very common in Dubai villas due to the high humidity and temperature difference between the air-conditioned interior and the hot outside wall. The wall is likely acting as a thermal bridge, causing moisture to condense.
For cleaning a patch under one square meter, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of water and detergent or a dedicated mould cleaner. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and doesn't address the underlying moisture. Dry the area thoroughly immediately after cleaning with a fan. Your clothes should be salvageable. Remove all items from the closet and inspect them. For washable fabrics, launder them with a mould-inhibiting additive or vinegar. For dry-clean-only items, shake them outdoors and have them professionally cleaned. Sun-drying is highly effective. The critical step is addressing the moisture source. This is likely persistent condensation from the thermal bridge. After cleaning, improve air circulation in the closet by leaving the door ajar or using a small desiccant dehumidifier. For a permanent solution, a professional inspection can identify if added insulation on that exterior wall is necessary to prevent recurrence. If the mould returns quickly or covers a larger area, a professional assessment is recommended to check for hidden moisture within the wall cavity. |
