How to clean black mold in closet or call maintenance?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we keep our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, it seems to have just exploded. What's the best way to clean this myself, or should I immediately call my building's maintenance?

That black fuzzy growth is almost certainly mold, a common issue here due to our high humidity levels and the constant temperature swings from AC. Since it's on an exterior wall, condensation forming behind the wall is a likely cause, especially during humid periods.

For a small, isolated patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Do not just wipe it, as this can aerosolize spores. A solution of white vinegar or a diluted detergent is often effective; avoid bleach as it only removes the surface discoloration and does not address the moisture source. Scrub the area gently, dry it completely, and ensure the closet is well-ventilated afterward.

However, the critical step is identifying and stopping the moisture source. In Dubai, this is often condensation from poorly insulated exterior walls or a hidden leak. If the mold returns quickly, the problem is ongoing.

You should immediately inform your building's maintenance team. Under Dubai regulations, building owners are responsible for the structural integrity of the property, which includes addressing moisture intrusion from outside. They need to inspect the exterior wall for cracks or failed seals and rectify the issue to prevent recurrence. If the mold growth is extensive, has a strong musty odor, or you have health concerns, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the full scope and recommend appropriate remediation.
