How to clean black mold in closet or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It must have been there a while, and I'm worried it's because of the humidity. What's the most effective way for me to clean this myself, or should I just call the building management straight away?

For a small patch (under one square foot) you can clean it yourself. First, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Move everything out of the closet. The black substance is likely mildew or common Cladosporium, but proper identification requires a lab test. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe dry. Do not use bleach, as it only lightens the stain and doesn't kill the root structure on porous surfaces.

The real issue is the moisture source. In Dubai's climate, this is almost always condensation from an AC supply duct running through that closet or a small gap letting in humid air. After cleaning, monitor the spot. If it returns, the moisture problem is unresolved.

You should inform building management now. Under Dubai regulations, the responsibility for structural moisture issues and hidden AC duct leaks typically falls on the property owner or management. They need to send their maintenance team to inspect the AC system and the building envelope. A professional inspection can identify the condensation source, which is crucial for a permanent fix. If the mold covers a larger area or you detect a musty smell throughout the room, a certified mold inspection is advised to assess potential spread within the walls.
