How to clean black mold in Dubai villa myself?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoe boxes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Al Barsha, and it feels slightly damp. What’s the best way to clean this myself, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company here in Dubai?

Black mold on an exterior wall in a Dubai villa often indicates a condensation issue, which is common here due to the high humidity and constant AC use creating temperature differentials. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself, but identifying and stopping the moisture source is the critical first step.
Start by moving everything away from the area. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses to avoid inhaling spores or skin contact. Do not use bleach, as it can worsen the problem by adding moisture and doesn't kill the roots. Instead, use a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner or a solution of distilled white vinegar. Scrub the area gently with a stiff brush, then wipe it dry with disposable cloths. However, the dampness you feel suggests a more persistent problem. In Al Barsha villas, this is frequently due to thermal bridging—where the cold from the AC meets the outside heat, causing condensation inside the wall cavity. Simply cleaning the surface will not stop it from returning. For any mold on porous materials like drywall or if the area is larger than a square foot, professional assessment is strongly recommended. They can use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact condensation source within the wall, which is not a DIY task. Recurring mold in this climate is a sign of an underlying building envelope issue that needs to be addressed to prevent regrowth and potential structural damage. A professional inspection can determine if the remediation requires removing a section of the wall to properly dry and treat the cavity. |
