How to clean black mold in wardrobe and report landlord?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading on the back wall of the wardrobe where we keep our winter clothes. It's in our master bedroom, and the room has felt more humid than usual since we started running the AC non-stop this summer. What's the most effective way to clean this ourselves, and is this something we absolutely have to report to our landlord in Dubai?

The most effective way to clean it yourself is to first address the humidity source. For a small area (less than 1 square meter), wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the affected surface with a mixture of detergent and warm water, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Thoroughly dry the area with a fan afterwards. Discard any porous items like cardboard boxes that are contaminated.
Given Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use, this mold is likely due to condensation from the cold wall meeting warm, humid air. This is a common issue. To prevent recurrence, improve ventilation in the wardrobe by not overpacking it and occasionally leaving the doors open. A moisture absorber (desiccant) can help. In Dubai, you are generally required to report any property damage, including moisture-related mold growth, to your landlord. This is not just about cleaning the surface; the landlord is responsible for investigating and fixing the underlying cause, which could be inadequate insulation in the external wall or a hidden plumbing leak. Document the issue with clear photographs and formally notify them in writing (email is best). A professional inspection, which includes moisture mapping, is often needed to identify the root cause and ensure it is properly remediated, not just wiped away. |
