How to clean closet mold and prevent it permanently?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the inside wall has developed black spots, and our clothes have started to smell damp. I first noticed it a couple of weeks after that unusually heavy dew season we had. The room is always colder than the rest of the apartment because the AC vent is right above it. What's the most effective way to clean this and what can I do to stop the mold from coming back for good?

First, identify and fix the source of moisture. The temperature difference between your cold room and the humid air is causing condensation on that inside wall. This is a common issue in Dubai, especially during periods of high humidity like the recent dew.

For cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Remove all items from the closet. Wipe the mold off the surface with a microfiber cloth dampened with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning agent. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the surface stain and does not kill the roots. Allow the area to dry completely.

To prevent recurrence, you must manage the humidity and temperature. Keep the closet doors slightly ajar to allow air circulation from the room. Consider using a renewable desiccant like silica gel inside the closet. The most critical step is to adjust your AC usage; avoid setting the temperature excessively low, as this increases condensation. Using a dehumidifier in the bedroom can also help maintain a relative humidity level below 60%, which inhibits mold growth.

For a persistent problem, the wall's insulation might be insufficient. If the mold returns or covers an area larger than one square meter, a professional inspection is recommended to assess for hidden moisture within the wall cavity and to perform remediation that addresses the root cause, not just the visible growth.
