How to clean closet mold and prevent its return?« Back to Previous Page

The master bedroom closet in our Marina apartment has developed patches of black mold on the back wall, and I only noticed it after pulling out the winter clothes. We keep the AC on constantly but it’s a tight, enclosed space with no ventilation. What’s the most effective way to clean this and what can I do to stop it from coming back, like installing a dehumidifier or something else?

That black mold in your Marina closet is a classic symptom of Dubai's high humidity and condensation, made worse by a lack of airflow in an enclosed space. The constant AC cools the room's air, but the unventilated closet stays warmer, causing moisture to condense on the cooler wall—a perfect environment for mold.

For cleaning small patches (under 1 square meter), wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of white vinegar and water or a dedicated mold remover. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and can worsen indoor air quality. After cleaning, the wall must be completely dried. A fan directed into the closet will help.

To stop it from returning, you must address the humidity and lack of ventilation. Installing a small, plug-in dehumidifier or desiccant bags inside the closet is highly effective for such a small, enclosed area. For a more integrated solution, leave the closet doors ajar periodically to allow your room's AC to circulate dry, conditioned air into the space. Ensure no items are pushed tightly against the wall, as this traps moisture.

If the mold covers a larger area, has a strong musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, the moisture source may be more serious, like a hidden leak in the wall. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is needed to find the core issue. Lab testing of the mold can also identify the species, which is important for determining the health risk and proper remediation protocol.
