How to clean closet mold and prevent spreading?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started smelling really damp, and I just found a patch of black fuzzy mold on my winter jackets and the back wall. It’s been like this since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. What’s the best way to clean this myself without ruining my clothes, and should I be worried about it spreading to the rest of the room?

That damp smell and visible black mold indicate high humidity has condensed on your cooler exterior wall, creating the perfect environment for growth. This is very common in Dubai's climate, especially during humid periods when the temperature difference between your air-conditioned room and the outside wall is significant.
For cleaning, remove all affected items from the closet immediately to prevent further contamination. For washable fabrics like jackets, a hot wash cycle (if the fabric allows) with a detergent containing a disinfectant is often effective. For dry-clean-only items, inform the cleaner about the mold so they can use appropriate treatments. To clean the wall itself, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the affected area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe down with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to ten parts water) to disinfect. Ensure the area is thoroughly dried afterwards with a fan. Do not simply paint over it, as the mold will regrow. To prevent it from returning, you must address the moisture source. This is a condensation issue. Improve air circulation inside the closet by leaving the door ajar and ensuring items are not pressed directly against the exterior wall. A portable dehumidifier or a desiccant box inside the closet can help measurably reduce ambient humidity. If the problem is persistent or the affected area is large (generally over 10 square feet), a professional inspection is recommended to assess for hidden moisture in the wall and identify the mold species, as some types require more specific remediation protocols. |
