How to clean closet mold and report to Dubai landlord?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and it’s gotten worse since the recent humidity. What’s the best way to clean this ourselves, and is this something I should report to my landlord in Dubai?

First, identify and stop the moisture source. In Dubai, mold on an exterior wall during humid months is almost always due to condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the hot, humid outside air. This wall is likely a "thermal bridge," a spot where cold transfers, causing water to condense inside.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of water and detergent. Avoid using bleach, as it only removes the colour and can irritate your lungs without addressing the root cause. Dry the area thoroughly immediately after cleaning. Discard any porous items like cardboard boxes that show mold growth.

You should report this to your landlord. Under typical Dubai rental contracts, the tenant is responsible for maintenance and cleaning, but the landlord is responsible for resolving structural issues that cause persistent dampness, like insufficient insulation on an exterior wall. Provide clear photos and a written notification. The landlord should address the insulation flaw to prevent recurrence; otherwise, the mold will return.

If the mold covers a larger area, returns quickly after cleaning, or if anyone in the household experiences respiratory issues, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the extent and identify all moisture pathways.
