How to clean closet mold anf fix AC mositure source?« Back to Previous Page

The ceiling in our master bedroom closet has black spots that seem to be spreading. It’s right on the corner where the wall meets the ceiling, and I’m worried it’s from the AC unit in the adjacent room, especially with all the humidity lately. What’s the best way to clean this safely and, more importantly, who should I call to check the AC unit to stop the moisture at the source?

Black spots at the ceiling-wall junction are a classic sign of condensation, a very common issue in Dubai's climate. The AC unit in the adjacent room is the likely source; its cold air duct may be poorly insulated, causing the wall to sweat and create a damp environment perfect for mold.

For cleaning a small area, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the surface with a diluted white vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 1 part water) or a specialized mold remover. Do not simply paint over it, as the mold will return. However, cleaning is a temporary fix if the moisture source isn't addressed.

The moisture is the real problem. You need a certified HVAC technician to inspect the AC unit and its ductwork. They should check for and fix inadequate insulation on the cold air ducts, ensure the drain pan and condensate line are not clogged, and verify the unit is properly sized and dehumidifying correctly. This is the only way to prevent recurrence.

For extensive growth or if the issue persists after cleaning and HVAC repair, a professional mold inspection is advised to assess the extent and identify the species. A company with its own microbiology lab can provide the most accurate identification and remediation plan based on lab results, not guesswork.
