How to clean closet mold on damp outside wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it feels a bit damp. I’m worried it’s spreading to our belongings.
What's the best way to clean this ourselves, and should we get our building's maintenance involved for the damp wall?

Start by moving your clothes and any stored items away from the affected wall to prevent further contamination. For a small patch, a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) can be effective. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area thoroughly, let the solution sit for 10-15 minutes, then wipe it clean and ensure the area is completely dry.
However, the dampness indicates an underlying moisture issue, which is the root cause. In Dubai’s climate, this is often due to condensation from the temperature differential between your air-conditioned room and the hot exterior wall, or sometimes a minor leak. Simply cleaning the visible mold will not stop it from returning. You absolutely should involve your building’s maintenance team. The damp wall is a building envelope issue they are responsible for investigating and repairing. This is a common concern in UAE construction. They need to check for and address any leaks or insufficient insulation on that external wall to prevent recurrent moisture. For porous materials like drywall or the back of furniture where mold has penetrated, cleaning may not be sufficient, and replacement is often needed. If the patch is larger than one square meter, has a strong musty odor, or you are concerned about your belongings, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging can identify the exact moisture source and extent. Air or surface sampling can also confirm the mold type and guide the appropriate remediation steps. |
