How to clean mold from AC vent in apartment?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be blowing out a damp, earthy smell, and I just noticed some black speckles around the ceiling vent in the master bedroom. With the humidity rising again, I'm really worried it's the start of a mold problem. What's the best way to clean the unit and the vent area myself to stop this from getting worse?

Based on my professional experience with mold issues in Dubai, the symptoms you describe—damp smell and black speckles around the AC vent—are classic indicators of microbial growth, commonly referred to as "black mold." The high humidity and constant AC use in JVC create a perfect environment for condensation inside the ductwork, leading to mold.

For a minor, visible surface growth on the vent grille, you can carefully remove it and clean it with a solution of warm water and a few drops of mild detergent. Ensure it is completely dry before reattaching. However, this only addresses the symptom, not the source. The mold you see is likely just the fruiting bodies; the main colony is almost certainly inside the AC unit or the concealed ductwork, which requires professional assessment and cleaning.

DIY cleaning is strongly discouraged. Disturbing the mold can aerosolize harmful spores throughout your apartment, worsening indoor air quality and potential health risks. Furthermore, in the UAE, handling mold improperly can violate health and safety standards for rented properties.

Given Dubai's climate, this problem will recur without a comprehensive solution. We strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified team at Saniservice uses specialized tools like borescopes to inspect deep within the AC system and ductwork, followed by industrial-grade HEPA vacuuming and antimicrobial treatment to eradicate the growth at its source and prevent recurrence.
