How to clean mold from AC vent in JVC?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a damp, earthy smell, especially when I first turn it on in my Jumeirah Village Circle bedroom. I’ve noticed a few small black spots starting to form around the edge of the vent. I’m really worried it’s mold and that it’s going to get worse with the summer humidity. What’s the most effective way to clean the AC unit and vent to kill the mold and stop it from coming back?

That damp, earthy smell and visible black spots are classic signs of a mold issue in your AC system, a very common problem in JVC due to our high humidity and constant AC use.
For the vent cover itself, you can clean it safely. Remove the vent cover, soak it in a solution of warm water and a few drops of mild detergent, then scrub the spots with a soft brush. After rinsing and letting it dry completely, you can wipe it down with a diluted white vinegar solution to help inhibit new growth. However, this only addresses the visible part. The smell indicates mold is likely growing deeper inside the duct or on the cooling coil, which you cannot safely access yourself. Professional remediation is strongly recommended for this. The process involves containing the area, using HEPA vacuums to remove spores from the ducts, and applying EPA-approved biocides to the coil and interior surfaces to kill the root colony. Crucially, they must identify and rectify the moisture source—often a clogged condensate drain line, which is extremely common here and causes the standing water that mold thrives on. Without addressing the internal moisture problem, the mold will return. A proper inspection by a company with micro-sampling capabilities can identify the species and the exact location of the infestation, ensuring the remediation targets the actual problem, not just the symptoms. |
