How to clean mold from closet and fix AC?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be making our bedroom closet smell damp and musty, especially when it first turns on. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this black speckling on some leather bags and the back wall of the closet. I’m worried it’s spreading from the AC unit itself. What’s the most effective way to clean the mold out of the closet and who should I call to properly service the AC to stop this from happening again?

First, address the closet mold. For leather bags, wipe them with a diluted white vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 3 parts water) and let them dry completely away from sunlight. For the wall, a solution of detergent and water can remove surface mold. However, this is a temporary fix if the moisture source isn't stopped.

The damp, musty smell when the AC starts is a strong indicator of microbial growth inside the unit or its ductwork. In Dubai's climate, AC systems constantly manage high humidity and can develop condensation issues, leading to mold if not properly maintained. The black speckling in your closet is likely a result of this contaminated air being blown into the space.

For a permanent solution, you need a two-part approach. A professional mold inspection is recommended to identify the species and the extent of the contamination within the AC system, as some types require specific remediation protocols. They can use borescopes to view inside the ducts and take samples for lab analysis to confirm the type of mold.

To fix the AC, you should call a licensed HVAC and duct cleaning company that specializes in mold remediation, not a general AC repair service. Look for providers certified by the Dubai Municipality or those who follow NADCA standards. The effective process involves using HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial treatments on the evaporator coils, drip pan, and entire ductwork system. They should provide before-and-after documentation or lab results to verify the cleanup's effectiveness. This comprehensive service will stop the spread of mold spores from the AC into your closet and living space.
