How to clean mold from items and fix AC leak?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom closet seems to be leaking a little bit, and now I’ve found small black spots on a few of my handbags and shoes stored in there. It’s only in that one enclosed space, but with this humidity, I’m worried it will spread to our clothes. What’s the most effective way to clean the mold off leather and fabric and what should we do to the AC unit to stop it for good?

The black spots are likely mold caused by condensation from your AC unit, a common issue in Dubai's humid climate where AC systems work year-round. For leather goods, wipe gently with a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water, then condition the leather afterward. For fabric items, a solution of baking soda and water can be applied, gently brushed, and allowed to dry completely in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight.

The root cause is the AC leak. A constantly damp drain pan or a clogged condensate drain line is the usual culprit. Simply cleaning the items won't stop the mold from returning; the moisture source must be addressed. Turn off the unit and have a certified HVAC technician inspect it. They will need to unclog the drain line, ensure the drain pan is properly sloped and draining, and check the insulation on the cooling coils. For a persistent problem in an enclosed space like a closet, ensuring adequate ventilation around the unit is also critical.

If the mold growth on your belongings is extensive or has penetrated deeply, or if you notice a musty odor persisting after cleaning the AC, a professional mold inspection is advised to assess if spores have spread within the closet walls or ventilation system.
