How to clean mold from leather and fix AC leak?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little, and now I've found black spots all over my leather bags and shoes stored in there. We had some really humid nights last week and the musty smell is strong. What's the best way to clean this mold off without ruining my stuff and how can I stop the AC unit from dripping like this again?

First, move your leather items out of the closet immediately to prevent further exposure. For cleaning, use a solution of equal parts distilled water and 70% isopropyl alcohol. Dab it onto the mold with a soft, clean cloth—never rub or scrub, as this can grind the spores into the leather. Test this on a small, hidden area first. Allow items to dry completely away from direct sunlight, then treat with a leather conditioner. For severe mold growth, a professional restoration service is advisable, as mold can permanently stain and degrade leather.
The AC leak and musty smell are directly related. In Dubai's climate, the constant AC operation creates significant condensation. A clogged condensate drain line is the most common cause of leaks. This stagnant water in the drip pan then becomes a source for mold growth inside the unit, which is then blown into your closet. To stop it, the AC unit's drain line needs to be professionally cleared and the internal drip pan cleaned. The interior coil and blower assembly should also be inspected for mold growth; if present, a full AC hygiene service is needed to remove the biofilm and sanitize the system. Simply cleaning the vent is insufficient. For a recurring issue like this, a comprehensive inspection is the best course of action to identify the root cause and prevent it from happening again, especially before the more humid summer months arrive. |
