How to clean mold from leather and prevent it permanently?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom closet has been leaking on and off for a couple of months, and now I’ve found black fuzzy mold all over our leather shoes and handbags stored in there. We had a guy come to fix the AC drip, but I’m terrified the mold will just come back in this humidity. What’s the most effective way to clean this and how can I make sure it’s completely gone for good?

Leather requires a specific approach to avoid damage. Start by taking the affected items outside to a well-ventilated area to avoid spreading spores indoors. Wear an N95 mask and gloves for protection.

Gently brush off the dry, fuzzy mold with a soft, dry cloth. For cleaning, use a solution of equal parts water and 70% isopropyl alcohol. Dampen a clean, soft cloth with the solution, wring it out thoroughly, and gently wipe the leather. Avoid soaking it. Allow the items to air dry completely away from direct sunlight or heat, which can crack the leather. Once dry, treat with a quality leather conditioner.

Permanently preventing its return is the critical part, especially in Dubai's climate. The leak may be fixed, but the residual moisture and spores within the closet structure are the real issue. Mold will always return if the source of humidity isn't eliminated.

You need to address the closet itself. The drywall, insulation, and backing of the AC unit likely absorbed significant moisture over those months. Surface cleaning won't reach this. The entire affected area must be professionally inspected to assess hidden damage. Remediation often involves removing and replacing contaminated porous materials like damp drywall or insulation to eradicate the colony at its source.

After remediation, ensure the closet is completely dry. A dehumidifier or desiccant bags can help maintain low humidity in that enclosed space. For a verifiable, permanent solution, a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the mold and its root cause have been successfully resolved.
