How to clean mold from leather and stop AC leak?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little bit, and now I'm finding black spots on a few of my handbags and shoes that were stored in there. It's been super humid lately and I'm worried it's mold. What's the best way to clean the leather and suede to save them, and how can I stop the AC unit from leaking and causing this again?

As a certified mold remediation specialist in the UAE, the black spots you're seeing are almost certainly mold growth, a common issue here due to our extreme humidity and year-round AC use, which creates significant condensation.
For the affected items, immediate action is required. For smooth leather, wipe gently with a soft cloth dampened with a 50/50 solution of water and isopropyl alcohol, then allow to dry completely away from direct sunlight. For suede, use a specialized suede brush to lift the spores. Do not use water or household cleaners, as they can permanently damage the material. If the mold has penetrated deeply, I strongly recommend professional hygienization services to prevent cross-contamination and ensure the spores are properly eradicated. The root cause is the AC leak. This is a critical issue that requires a professional HVAC technician to address. The leak is likely due to a clogged condensate drain line—extremely common in Dubai's dusty environment—a faulty condensate pump, or improper insulation on the cold lines. Simply wiping the unit is insufficient. The drain pan and line need to be professionally cleared, cleaned, and treated with an algicide to prevent future microbial growth. Given the presence of active mold growth, a professional inspection is advised to assess the extent of the contamination within the closet and the AC system itself, as per Dubai Municipality's public health and safety guidelines.
