How to clean mold from leather and stop AC leaks?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom closet seems to be leaking a little, and now I’ve found black spots spreading on a few of my handbags and shoes stored in there. We’ve had the humidity cranked up for months, and I'm worried this is the cause. What’s the safest and most effective way to clean mold off leather and suede items here in Dubai, and how can I stop the AC from causing this again?

The black spots are likely mold, caused by excess humidity from your AC leak combined with Dubai's climate. Condensation from a leaking unit creates the perfect damp environment for mold to grow on organic materials like leather.

For cleaning, first move the affected items to a dry, well-ventilated area away from the contamination source. For smooth leather, gently wipe the mold off with a soft cloth slightly dampened with a 50/50 solution of water and isopropyl alcohol, then dry thoroughly. For suede, use a dry, soft-bristled brush (like a toothbrush) to carefully brush the spores away outdoors to avoid inhaling them. Never use harsh chemicals or excess moisture, as this can permanently damage the material. For valuable items, consulting a professional leather cleaner is the safest option to prevent ruin.

To stop the root cause, the AC leak must be addressed. Turn off the unit to prevent further water damage. The leak is likely due to a clogged condensate drain line, which is common when units run constantly in high humidity. A certified HVAC technician should inspect, unclog, and potentially treat the drain line to prevent future blockages. They can also check the unit’s insulation and ensure it is properly sized for the space.

Finally, have the closet and AC system professionally inspected for mold. Spores from the leak may have spread into the ductwork. Remediation is needed to remove the contamination at its source and prevent it from affecting your health or belongings again. Controlling indoor humidity with a properly functioning AC is the best long-term prevention.
