How to clean mold in wardrobe and stop it returning?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Mirdif villa has been feeling really damp lately, and I just found a bunch of black speckles in the back of the wardrobe where we store our winter clothes. It’s been extra humid the last few weeks, and I'm worried it's going to spread. What’s the most effective way to clean this and what kind of dehumidifier should I get to stop it from coming back?

Wipe the affected area with a solution of white vinegar or a mild detergent, then thoroughly dry it. For porous surfaces like wood, scrubbing may not remove deep growth. Always wear an N95 mask and gloves to avoid inhaling spores or skin contact.

To stop it from returning, a dehumidifier is essential. In a bedroom, a unit with a capacity of 10-20 litres per day is typically sufficient. Maintain indoor humidity levels below 60%, which is the threshold where mould growth is significantly inhibited. The Dubai climate, especially during humid summer months, makes this a critical control measure.

The location—a wardrobe on an exterior wall in Mirdif—suggests this could be a condensation issue. Ensure the room's AC is functioning correctly and that cold air is not directly hitting the wardrobe, creating a cold surface for moisture to condense on. Improve air circulation by not overstuffing the wardrobe and occasionally leaving the doors ajar.

If the mould covers an area larger than one square meter, returns quickly after cleaning, or you detect a persistent musty odour, a professional inspection is advised. They can identify the moisture source (like a hidden leak in the wall) and perform lab testing to confirm the mould type, which dictates the appropriate remediation protocol.
