How to clean mold off bags and fix AC leak?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a bit, and now I’ve found black spots growing on a few of my leather handbags stored in there. It’s been humid lately and I’m worried it’s going to spread to my clothes. What’s the best way to clean the mold off the bags and, more importantly, how can I stop the AC unit from leaking and causing this again?

First, move the bags out of the closet immediately to prevent further contamination. For leather, use a soft cloth slightly dampened with a 50/50 mix of distilled water and isopropyl alcohol or white vinegar. Gently wipe the mould off, then dry thoroughly with a clean, dry cloth. Never soak the leather. For fabric linings, a specialist cleaner is often needed, as improper cleaning can set the stain and odour.

The root cause is the AC leak, which creates the high humidity mould needs. In Dubai's climate, AC units work year-round and are prone to condensation issues. The leak is likely due to a clogged condensate drain line, a common issue here from dust and microbial growth. You can check the drain pan for standing water.

To stop it permanently, the AC system needs professional servicing. A technician should clear the drain line with a vacuum or compressed air, ensure the drain pan is properly sloped, and check that the condensate pump (if present) is working. They should also verify the unit's refrigerant levels and insulation, as improper cooling can cause excess condensation.

After fixing the leak, the closet must be completely dried. Use a dehumidifier or fan for 24-48 hours. All surfaces, including the AC unit's interior and the closet walls, should be cleaned with a microbial cleaner to remove any residual spores. For persistent musty odours or if the leak was significant, a professional inspection can identify hidden moisture and mould behind walls or in the AC system itself, which is often needed in severe cases to prevent recurrence.
