How to clean mold off leather bags and stop AC leak?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little bit and I've just discovered black mold spots on a few of my leather handbags and shoes. It's a built-in wardrobe in our Marina apartment and it’s always a bit damp. What's the best way to clean the mold off my bags and, more importantly, how do I stop the AC unit from causing this again?

The mold growth on your leather goods is a direct symptom of the chronic dampness in your wardrobe, a common issue in Dubai's high-humidity climate, especially in coastal areas like Marina. The AC condensate drain line is likely clogged or the drip pan is damaged, causing continuous moisture that creates an ideal environment for mold.
For the leather items, do not attempt to clean them with household cleaners like bleach or vinegar, as these can permanently damage the material. For superficial, dry mold, use a soft brush to gently remove the spores outdoors. Follow this by wiping the surface with a soft cloth lightly dampened with a solution of mild soap (like saddle soap) and distilled water, then dry immediately with a clean, absorbent cloth. Allow the items to air dry completely away from direct sunlight or heat sources, as this can cause the leather to crack. For valuable items or deeply ingrained mold, I strongly recommend professional leather cleaning to avoid irreversible damage. However, cleaning the items is a temporary fix. The root cause, the AC leak, must be addressed. You must stop the moisture source. This requires a professional HVAC technician to inspect the unit, clear the condensate drain line, and repair or replace the faulty drip pan. Furthermore, the built-in wardrobe and the affected area will require professional hygienization. Simply wiping visible mold is insufficient; airborne spores and mycotoxins will remain. Our certified mold remediation team at Saniservice uses specialized HEPA filtration, antimicrobial fogging, and desiccant dehumidifiers to properly remediate the space, ensuring it is safe and mold-free, in full compliance with Dubai Municipality's public health and safety standards. To permanently resolve this and protect your health and belongings, a full inspection and remediation are crucial.
