How to clean moldy AC and check ducts?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been blowing out a really damp, earthy smell for the past couple of weeks, and I just spotted some black speckles around the vent. We keep the temperature low at night and I'm worried the condensation is causing mold inside the unit itself. What's the best way to clean the AC to prevent this from happening again, and should I get a professional to look at the ducts in our Jumeirah Village Triangle villa?

That damp, earthy smell and visible black speckles are strong indicators of microbial growth inside your AC unit, a common issue in Dubai's climate where continuous AC use creates significant condensation.

For the unit itself, turn off the power completely. Wipe the accessible interior surfaces, fan blades, and the vent with a microfiber cloth dampened with a solution of warm water and a few drops of dish soap. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals, as they can damage components and release harmful fumes. After cleaning, let the unit dry thoroughly before restoring power. To help prevent recurrence, keep the unit running on fan mode for 15-20 minutes after turning off the cooling to evaporate residual moisture.

Given the smell has persisted for weeks and you've spotted growth, the issue is likely deeper within the system or the ductwork. Cleaning the visible parts of the indoor unit only addresses a fraction of the problem. In a villa, the duct network can harbour extensive contamination that requires professional assessment and remediation.

For a thorough resolution, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will use borescopes to inspect the hidden sections of the evaporator coil and the ductwork running through your villa. The most effective approach is to have the entire system inspected, then cleaned using HEPA vacuuming and antimicrobial treatments applied by certified technicians. The key is to request before-and-after proof, such as photographic evidence or surface swab results, to verify the cleanliness of the system. This is a standard practice for reputable providers in the UAE.
