How to clean moldy closet and prevent future growth?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little bit of water onto the floor for a while now, and I just pulled out my winter jackets to find several of them covered in black mold spots. I’m so upset! I’ve fixed the leak, but how can I thoroughly clean the closet space and prevent this from ever happening again in our humid climate?

Alright, so you’ve got a classic case of AC condensate leak leading to mold growth, a super common issue here in Dubai, especially with the high humidity. First off, don't panic. You've fixed the leak, which is the critical first step. Now, let's get that closet sorted.

For cleaning the jackets, if they are valuable or the mold is extensive, I'd strongly recommend professional textile cleaning – trying to wash mold out yourself can just spread the spores. For the closet itself, you need to address both the visible mold and the hidden moisture. Mix a solution of warm water and a few tablespoons of baking soda or a dedicated, non-bleach mold cleaner. Scrub the affected walls, floor, and shelving thoroughly. Bleach is not recommended as it doesn't kill the roots and can damage surfaces. After cleaning, everything must be COMPLETELY dried. Use fans and a dehumidifier in the room for at least 24-48 hours.

Prevention is everything here. In our climate, humidity is the enemy. That closet needs constant air circulation. Leave the closet door cracked open regularly and ensure there's a gap between your clothes and the wall. Consider a small renewable desiccant dehumidifier pouch inside the closet to absorb ambient moisture. Most importantly, have your AC unit serviced professionally at least twice a year, as per Dubai Municipality's recommended guidelines for HVAC maintenance, to ensure the drain line is clear and the drip pan is functioning. A small leak you don't notice for a week is all it takes.

If the mold has penetrated the drywall or you notice a persistent musty smell, the growth might be inside the wall cavity. At that point, this is a job for professionals with proper containment and HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination. For a proper inspection to be sure it's all gone, give us a call at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com. We can do moisture mapping and air testing to ensure your home is truly safe.
