How to clean moldy clothes and treat a damp wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Mirdif for about a year, and I just pulled out the winter clothes bin from the back of the wardrobe. A bunch of my jackets and sweaters have these black and green fuzzy spots all over them, and the whole storage area has a really damp, earthy smell. It's been so humid the last couple of months, and I guess the closet doesn't get any air flow. What's the best way to get this cleaned and who should I call to properly treat the wardrobe so it doesn't just come back?

Based on your description, you are dealing with a classic case of mold growth due to high ambient humidity and lack of air circulation, a very common issue in Dubai villas, especially in enclosed storage areas that are not climate-controlled. The first step is to understand that the mold on the clothes is a symptom; the source is the environmental condition within the wardrobe.

For the moldy clothing, do not simply brush it off indoors as this will aerosolize spores. For washable items, a professional-grade approach is to take them outside and gently vacuum the surface mold with a HEPA-filtered vacuum cleaner to remove loose spores. Then, launder them with a mold-inhibiting detergent; adding white vinegar or a proprietary antimicrobial laundry additive to the wash cycle is effective. For dry-clean-only items, you must inform the cleaner about the mold so they can pre-treat them appropriately.

However, cleaning the clothes is only addressing the contamination, not the cause. The wardrobe itself requires professional assessment and remediation. The damp, earthy smell indicates active microbial growth on the surfaces and likely within the porous materials of the shelves and walls. In the UAE's climate, simply wiping it down with a bleach solution is a temporary fix and will not address hidden growth or the humidity problem.

A certified mold inspector will conduct a thorough assessment, potentially including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to identify the full extent of the growth and the precise moisture source—often condensation from temperature differentials or rising damp. Remediation involves containing the area, physically removing the contaminated materials, HEPA vacuuming, and applying EPA-approved antimicrobial coatings to prevent recurrence. Crucially, they will advise on corrective measures, such as improving ventilation or installing a dehumidifier, to maintain a dry environment.

For a proper and lasting solution, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Call our specialists at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
