How to clean moldy wardrobe nad prevent recurrence?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold. I just pulled our winter clothes out of the built-in wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a bunch of our jackets and sweaters have these black speckles all over them. The wardrobe is on an interior wall and it’s been sealed shut since last season. What’s the best way to completely clean the wardrobe and prevent this from happening again next year?

First, remove all affected clothing and items immediately. Do not attempt to shake or brush the mold off indoors, as this will spread spores. Wash the fabric items with a mold-killing detergent or add white vinegar to the wash cycle; dry them completely in the sun if possible.

For the wardrobe itself, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Vacuum the interior with a HEPA-filter vacuum to remove loose spores. Then, scrub all surfaces with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Avoid using bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage surfaces. Let the interior air out and dry completely with a fan before returning any items.

This type of mold growth is common in Dubai due to our high humidity, even inside air-conditioned homes. Sealed, dark spaces like wardrobes on interior walls are prime targets because stagnant air allows condensation and humidity to build up, especially from stored textiles.

To prevent recurrence, you must control the humidity. A small, rechargeable desiccant dehumidifier placed inside the wardrobe is highly effective. Also, never store clothes completely sealed; leave wardrobe doors slightly ajar periodically to allow air circulation. Before storing seasonal clothes, ensure they are impeccably clean and completely dry.

Given that your children are experiencing respiratory symptoms, this indicates a potential airborne spore issue that cleaning surfaces alone may not resolve. The mold on the clothes is likely a symptom of a broader humidity problem in that room. A professional inspection, including air quality testing, can identify the spore concentration and species present to determine the full scope. This is a common service here, with accredited labs providing the analysis.
