How to control bedroom closet moisture in humid villa?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has developed black spots on the leather shoes and bags I stored inside, and everything feels damp. This started after the humidity really spiked last month, and even though we run the AC constantly, the room never feels truly dry. What’s the most effective way to control the moisture in a specific room to stop this mold from coming back?

High humidity in villa closets is a common issue in Dubai, especially in coastal areas like Jumeirah. The most effective strategy is a multi-pronged approach targeting moisture control and air circulation.

First, improve air movement inside the closet. Leave the closet doors slightly ajar and ensure no furniture is blocking the AC vent in the bedroom. Stagnant air is the primary culprit. For enclosed spaces, a small, battery-operated dehumidifier or disposable moisture absorber pot placed inside the closet can help. Remove all affected items; leather is particularly susceptible and may require professional cleaning to salvage.

Second, address the room's environment. Your AC may be running but not effectively dehumidifying. Ensure the unit is set to "Dry" or "Cool" mode with a low fan speed, as this maximizes moisture removal. Check that the bedroom door is closed to allow the AC to properly condition that specific space. If the room still feels damp, the AC drain line might be clogged or the unit's refrigerant level could be low, hindering its dehumidification capacity.

For a persistent problem, the moisture source may be more significant. A professional inspection can identify if there's a small leak in the wall or a condensation issue within the AC system itself that's adding moisture to the room. In many cases, a dedicated, properly sized dehumidifier for the bedroom is the most reliable solution to maintain a low humidity level regardless of the weather outside.
