How to control closet humidity and prevent mold growth?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom’s walk-in closet has started to feel damp and smell musty, especially after we run the AC all night. I’ve noticed a few small black spots starting to form on the leather jacket I stored on the top shelf. We’re in a Jumeirah villa and I’m really worried it’s going to spread to all our clothes. What’s the most effective way to control the humidity in a closed closet like this to kill the mold and prevent it from coming back?

Closet humidity in Dubai often comes from condensation on cold AC ducts running through the space, combined with the high ambient humidity. The most effective first step is to improve air circulation. Leave the closet door ajar for a few hours each day and consider placing a small, battery-operated moisture absorber inside, like those containing silica gel.

For immediate concerns, wipe down all surfaces with a diluted white vinegar solution to address the visible growth. Remove and carefully clean any affected items, like the leather jacket, with a specialist cleaner; mold can permanently damage organic materials.

However, these are temporary measures if the underlying moisture source isn't addressed. The black spots and musty smell indicate active growth, which often means a professional inspection is warranted. In many Jumeirah villas, the issue is a poorly insulated AC supply duct inside the closet ceiling that constantly sweats in the heat. A certified inspector can identify this and recommend corrective actions, such as duct insulation, which is a common and effective solution here.

To prevent recurrence, maintain consistent AC use to control whole-home humidity and avoid storing damp clothes. For serious or recurring cases, a small, standalone dehumidifier can be used in the room. The key is verifying the fix with a post-remediation humidity meter reading to ensure levels are consistently below 60%.
