How to control closet humidity in Dubai apartment?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started to get dark, fuzzy patches on the leather boots and bags I stored in there. It’s been so humid the last few weeks that even with the AC running, the air feels damp. I’m worried it’s going to spread to my clothes and cause health issues. What’s the most effective way to control the humidity in a closed closet space here to stop this for good?

Closet humidity in Dubai is a common issue due to our high ambient humidity, especially during summer. The AC cools the main room but often doesn't circulate enough dry air into enclosed spaces like closets, leading to condensation and mold growth on organic materials like leather.

Start by removing all affected items immediately. For leather goods, wipe them down with a dilute vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 1 part water) and allow them to dry completely in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. Do not return them until the closet environment is stabilized.

The most effective immediate control is a renewable desiccant like silica gel. Place several large tubs or hanging bags of moisture absorber inside the closet; they will pull excess humidity from the air and need replacing every 4-8 weeks. A small, low-wattage dehumidifier designed for small spaces can also be highly effective if there's an electrical outlet nearby.

For a long-term solution, improve air circulation. Leave the closet doors ajar for a few hours each day to allow the room's AC to dehumidify the space. Avoid over-packing the closet, as tight stacks of clothes restrict airflow. Check for any leaks from adjacent bathrooms or walls, as these can be a hidden moisture source.

If the fuzzy patches are extensive or you notice a persistent musty smell, the mold growth may be more widespread within the closet structure. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging can identify the exact source of humidity. For confirmed growth on walls or shelves, remediation followed by lab-verified clearance testing is the only way to ensure it's stopped for good.
