How to control closet humidity to stop black mold?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has started to get these black speckles on the leather bags and shoes I have stored in there. I first noticed it about a month ago and it’s getting worse, even though the rest of the room seems fine. What’s the most effective way to control the humidity in a specific closet to stop this mold from growing and damaging our stuff?

The black speckles on your leather items are almost certainly mold, a common issue in Dubai's interior closets due to the extreme humidity and constant air conditioning. The interior wall likely has a lower surface temperature than the room's dew point, causing condensation to form inside the closed space and creating a perfect microclimate for mold growth on organic materials like leather.

Start by immediately removing all affected items from the closet to prevent further damage and potential spore spread. For the leather goods, gently wipe them down with a dilute solution of white vinegar and water, then allow them to dry completely in a well-ventilated area—never in direct sunlight, as it can damage the material.

To control humidity in the specific closet, you need to equalize the temperature and moisture levels with the rest of the air-conditioned room. The most effective first step is to leave the closet doors open for several hours each day to allow conditioned air to circulate. If that isn't sufficient, consider installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or a renewable desiccant pouch inside the closet. Ensure there are no obstructions blocking the room's AC vent, as proper airflow into the closet is critical.

For a more permanent solution, inspect the interior wall for any hidden leaks from adjacent bathrooms or pipes, which is a frequent culprit. If the problem persists despite these measures, the mold growth may be more extensive within the wall cavity. In such cases, a professional inspection with a thermal imaging camera and moisture meter is warranted to identify the condensation source accurately before it leads to structural damage.
