How to control closet moisture in Dubai without a dehumidifier?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started to get a faint damp smell, especially on the leather bags and shoes I store in there. I first noticed it a couple of weeks ago when the humidity really spiked, and now I’m worried it’s spreading to the clothes. We run the AC constantly, but it doesn't seem to be enough for that enclosed space. What’s the most effective way to control moisture and prevent mold in a walk-in closet here in Dubai, short of buying a huge dehumidifier?

Enclosed spaces like closets are notorious for humidity traps, especially in Jumeirah villas where external walls can transfer heat and create condensation points. Since you've noticed the smell on leather, which is particularly vulnerable, immediate action is needed.

First, improve air circulation. This is your most effective tool without a dehumidifier. Keep the closet doors open as much as possible and use a small battery-operated fan inside to keep air moving. Ensure your room's AC vent isn't blocked by furniture; its dry, cool air must reach the closet interior. If there's a vent in the closet itself, check it's fully open and unobstructed.

Second, address moisture absorption. Place moisture-absorbing products like silica gel desiccant packs or activated charcoal bags on shelves and in shoes. These are inexpensive and readily available here. For a larger closet, a hanging moisture absorber unit can be effective. Remove all items, especially leather goods and clothes, and wipe down every surface with a dilute vinegar solution to discourage new growth.

For a permanent solution, inspect the closet's exterior wall for cracks or poor insulation that might be letting in humid air. Ensure the villa's AC system is properly balanced and maintaining a consistent humidity level below 60%; an imbalance could mean the closet is isolated from the main system's dehumidification effect.

If the musty smell persists after these steps, a professional inspection is advised. Hidden mold behind baseboards or within walls is common here and requires specialized equipment like moisture meters and borescopes to identify the source. A lab analysis of a surface sample can confirm if the odor is from active mold growth.
