How to control closet moisture in humid weather?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started getting a faint damp smell, especially on the leather shoes and bags I store in there. We had a lot of humidity over the last few weeks and I'm worried it's the start of a mold problem I can't see yet. What's the best way to control the moisture in a built-in closet to stop this from getting worse?

Moisture in built-in closets is extremely common in Dubai's climate, especially during humid periods. The goal is to reduce humidity and increase air circulation to prevent mold from establishing itself.

First, improve airflow immediately. Leave the closet doors open for several hours each day to allow stagnant, humid air to escape. If the closet has an AC vent inside, ensure it is completely unobstructed by clothing or storage boxes. If it doesn't, consider placing a small, quiet battery-operated fan inside to keep air moving.

Second, address humidity directly. A renewable desiccant like silica gel is more effective than salt-based options for our humidity levels. Place several large tubs or hanging bags of desiccant on the closet shelves and floor, and remember to reactivate or replace them as instructed. For a larger closet, a compact, plug-in dehumidifier can be very effective.

Third, inspect the closet's environment. Check that the room's AC is running sufficiently to keep the overall space dry; sometimes raising the temperature a degree or two can reduce condensation without sacrificing comfort. Ensure no external walls are leaking or sweating, as this is a frequent source of hidden moisture in villas.

Since you're noticing a smell on leather goods, it's a strong indicator that conditions are right for mold growth. Wipe down all affected items with a dilute vinegar solution and allow them to dry thoroughly in a well-ventilated area before returning them. If the damp smell persists after a week of these measures, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging can identify a hidden condensation issue or water intrusion that needs addressing.
