How to control humidity in a master bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our villa in Jumeirah has felt really damp for the last couple of weeks, especially in the early morning. I just pulled the heavy winter clothes out of the built-in wardrobe and found a bunch of them covered in fuzzy black spots. I'm so upset, as some of them are ruined. Besides cleaning it up, what's the most effective way to control the humidity in that specific room to stop this from happening again?

The most effective way is to control humidity at its source, which is often a combination of Dubai's climate and your home's air conditioning. Start by ensuring your AC is set correctly. Set the thermostat to a constant 22-24°C to prevent the unit from short-cycling, which reduces its ability to dehumidify. A constantly running AC on a moderate setting removes far more moisture than one that frequently turns on and off.
For the wardrobe itself, improve air circulation. Leave the doors slightly ajar and avoid overpacking it. Consider using moisture-absorbing desiccant bags or a small, standalone dehumidifier placed inside or near the closet, especially during the more humid winter and spring months when AC use is lower. For immediate action, have your AC system inspected. A common issue in villas is an undersized or poorly maintained AC unit that cannot keep up with the latent humidity load. The drain pan or line could also be blocked, causing excess moisture to recirculate. If the dampness persists, the problem may be more systemic. A professional inspection can identify if there's a hidden leak in the en-suite bathroom or a breach in the building envelope. They can also take precise humidity readings to diagnose the issue. In many cases, supplementing your central AC with a dedicated, energy-efficient dehumidifier for that specific room is the most direct and effective permanent solution. |
