How to control humidity in a musty bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has developed black spots on the leather bags and shoes we stored there. We first noticed it about a month after the winter humidity set in, and even though we cleaned it, the musty smell is still lingering. What’s the most effective way to control the humidity in a closed space like this to stop it from coming back?

The black spots and musty smell are classic signs of a humidity issue, common here during the winter months when we turn off the AC but ambient moisture remains high. For an interior closet, the goal is to reduce moisture and increase air circulation.

Start by removing all items and cleaning affected surfaces with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mould-cleaning product. For leather goods, wipe them down and allow them to dry completely in a less humid area before even considering returning them to the closet. To control humidity, use a renewable desiccant like silica gel. Place several large tubs or hanging bags of it on the closet shelves; these will actively pull moisture from the air and can be refreshed in the sun every few months. A small, plug-in electric dehumidifier designed for small spaces can also be very effective.

Crucially, you must address the lack of air movement. Leave the closet doors open as often as possible and use a small battery-operated fan inside to circulate stagnant air. If the musty smell persists after these measures, the mould may have penetrated into the wall or behind the skirting board. In that case, a professional inspection is wise to identify a hidden moisture source and assess the extent, as remediation may be needed to resolve it completely.
