How to control humidity in a sealed closet for good?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Mirdif has started getting a fuzzy black mold on leather shoes and bags. It comes back every winter, and I think it's worse when we run the heater. What's the most effective way to control the humidity in a sealed closet to stop this from happening for good?

That black mold in your Mirdif villa closet is a classic Dubai winter issue caused by condensation. When you run the heater, the warm, humid indoor air seeps into the cooler closet (especially on an outside wall), and the moisture condenses, creating the perfect environment for mold. The goal is to either prevent that moist air from entering or actively manage the humidity inside.

First, clean all affected items with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated leather cleaner to kill the existing mold spores. For the closet itself, wipe all surfaces with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution.

To control humidity, a small, plug-in dehumidifier or several disposable moisture absorber boxes (like DampRid) placed inside the closet can be very effective. These will actively pull moisture from the air. For a more integrated solution, ensure the closet door isn't completely airtight; a small gap at the bottom or a vented door can allow for some air circulation, preventing stagnant, humid conditions. Storing items in breathable fabric bags instead of plastic can also help.

Since this is a recurring issue on an external wall, the problem might be more systemic. The wall itself could have a minor leak or insufficient insulation, causing a significant temperature differential that drives condensation. A professional inspection with a thermal imaging camera can identify this cold spot, and addressing that root cause is the only way to stop it for good. In many older villas, this requires adding insulation or improving the vapor barrier.
