How to control humidity in a sealed closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom walk-in closet in our Mirdif villa has started to feel really damp, and we just found black spots on a few of my husband's leather jackets and some shoeboxes at the back. We run the AC constantly but it's the one room without a vent. I'm so worried it's going to spread to all our clothes.
What's the most effective way to control the humidity in a sealed closet like this to prevent the mold from coming back after we clean it?

The most effective way is to introduce active air circulation and moisture control, as a sealed closet in a Dubai villa is a perfect incubator for mold. The constant high outdoor humidity, combined with temperature differences from the surrounding cooled rooms, causes condensation to form on walls and stored items.
Start by addressing the immediate problem: the existing mold. For leather and valuable items, professional cleaning is often necessary to prevent damage and properly remove spores. Clean all surfaces inside the closet with a solution designed to kill mold, not just bleach, which often only removes the visible colour. To prevent recurrence, install a small, battery-operated or plug-in dehumidifier or a renewable desiccant pod specifically designed for closets and small spaces. These passively absorb excess moisture from the air. More crucially, you need to create air exchange. Leave the closet door ajar whenever possible to allow conditioned air from the bedroom to circulate. If that’s not practical, consider having a small vent installed in the door or the wall connecting to the air-conditioned room to allow airflow. Placing a small, quiet USB-powered fan on the floor of the closet to run intermittently can also significantly reduce stagnant, damp air. For a persistent or large-scale problem, a professional inspection can identify the exact humidity source. In many Mirdif villas, the issue can be a slight seepage or lack of a vapour barrier in an external wall, which requires a more targeted solution. In cases of valuable contents or suspected wall cavity issues, a company with diagnostic tools like thermal imaging can pinpoint the condensation source accurately. |
