How to dehumidify a small closet to prevent mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a persistent damp, moldy smell coming from our walk-in closet in the bedroom. It’s gotten worse in the last few weeks, and I'm finding small patches of black mold on a few of my leather bags and shoes. The AC is always on, but the closet doesn't have its own vent.
What’s the most effective way to dehumidify a small, enclosed space like a closet to prevent this mold from coming back?

That's a very common issue here in Dubai, especially in closets on exterior walls or without direct AC airflow. The constant high ambient humidity, often 80-90% outside, is constantly trying to infiltrate your cooler, drier space. When that moist air gets trapped in a closed closet, it condenses on cooler surfaces like walls and leather goods, creating the perfect breeding ground for mold.
For a small enclosed space, the most effective DIY solution is a high-capacity desiccant dehumidifier, specifically one with renewable silica gel crystals. Avoid the cheap, small electric Peltier-type units; they're useless in our climate. You need something like the Eva-Dry renewable dehumidifiers. Place it in the closet, it will pull the moisture out of the air, and you simply plug it into an outlet every few months to "recharge" it by heating the crystals to release the water. Crucially, you must first address the existing mold. Those patches on your leather are just the visible part; spores are airborne. We strongly recommend a professional hygienization service to properly treat the affected items and the closet interior with an EPA-approved fungicide to prevent regrowth. Simply wiping it away often just spreads the spores. For a permanent fix, consider having an HVAC technician install a small supply air vent from your main bedroom AC unit into the closet to ensure constant air circulation and dehumidification. This is often the best long-term solution. Given the presence of visible mold, a professional inspection is wise to assess the full extent. We offer free consultations.
