How to dehumidify a small windowless closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed all our leather shoes in the walk-in closet have started getting this white, powdery mold on them. The closet is an interior room with no windows and I'm worried the humidity is ruining everything in there, especially with the current weather. What's the most effective way to dehumidify a small, enclosed space like that without doing a full renovation?

Based on your description, that white powdery substance is classic efflorescence from mold, a very common issue here in Dubai, especially in enclosed, non-ventilated spaces like closets during our high-humidity season. The lack of an external wall means zero natural air exchange, allowing moisture from the ambient air to settle and condense.
The most effective immediate solution is a compact, purpose-built desiccant dehumidifier. Avoid cheap, small refrigerant-based models you find online; they are largely ineffective in our climate, especially in small, warm spaces where they can't create the necessary temperature differential. A desiccant unit actively absorbs moisture from the air regardless of ambient temperature. Place it inside the closet, ensuring you empty its collection reservoir regularly. For a more permanent, set-and-forget solution, consider installing a mini-ventilation system that ducts dry air from your AC system into the space, but this requires minor renovation work. Crucially, before you do anything, you need to address the existing mold growth on your leather goods. Simply wiping it off isn't enough; the microscopic hyphae penetrate the material. We use specific EPA-approved antimicrobials designed for sensitive materials like leather to properly hygienize them and prevent recurrence. Given that you've already spotted visible growth, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. We can use thermal imaging and precise hygrometers to identify the exact humidity level and check for moisture sources you might not see, like a small plumbing leak in an adjacent wall. This is a free service we provide. For immediate advice or to schedule an inspection, please call our specialists at 800-MOLDS or email hello@saniservice.com. Let's get that closet protected before the really humid weather hits. |
