How to dry AC leak in Dubai humidity to prevent mold?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be leaking a little water onto the carpet below the unit. It’s been happening for a couple of weeks and now I’m terrified that black mold is going to start growing underneath. What’s the best way to dry it out completely in this humidity to prevent mold from taking hold?

A persistent AC leak in Jumeirah Village Circle requires immediate action due to Dubai's high humidity, which prevents proper drying and creates ideal conditions for mold. First, address the source: turn off the AC unit at the circuit breaker to stop the water flow. Soak up as much standing water as possible with towels, pressing firmly into the carpet and underlay.

Effective drying in this climate requires more than opening a window. Rent a commercial-grade dehumidifier and a high-volume air mover (fan) from a local hardware store. Place the dehumidifier in the center of the room and direct the air mover to blow across the damp carpet spot. You must run these appliances continuously for at least 48-72 hours to extract moisture from the carpet, pad, and concrete slab beneath. Merely drying the surface is insufficient.

After this drying period, carefully inspect the area. Peel back a corner of the carpet if possible to check the underside and the underlay, which holds moisture longest. Signs of a musty odor or any visible discoloration indicate microbial growth has already begun. In such cases, professional inspection is critical. DIY cleaning on established growth often spreads spores. A certified inspector can use moisture meters to verify the slab is dry and, if needed, take tape or air samples for lab analysis to confirm the presence and type of mold, which dictates the remediation protocol. Preventing a minor leak from becoming a major infestation is far more manageable.
