How to dry flooded villa walls to prevent mold?« Back to Previous Page

After the storm, the ground-floor storage room in my Jumeirah villa had a few inches of water seep in, ruining some old furniture and boxes. It’s been a week and the carpet still feels damp underneath and there's a persistent earthy smell that won't go away, even with the windows open. I'm worried about mold starting to grow behind the walls.
What's the most effective way to dry out the walls and subfloor completely to prevent mold, and should I hire a professional service or are there specific products I can use myself?

Based on the conditions you've described in your Jumeirah villa, you are facing a significant risk of concealed mold growth, and immediate, professional-grade intervention is required. The persistent dampness and earthy odor are clear indicators that moisture has wicked up into the drywall and, critically, into the concrete sub-slab and insulation below the carpet.
DIY methods like opening windows are ineffective in Dubai's high humidity and can actually prolong the drying process. The only way to prevent mold is to achieve rapid and complete drying. This requires industrial equipment: high-velocity air movers create evaporation off surfaces, and desiccant dehumidifiers are absolutely essential to condense that moisture out of the air, a process that standard consumer dehumidifiers cannot handle in a saturated concrete structure. The carpet and underlay must be lifted immediately to access the subfloor. The walls need to be checked for moisture content with a penetrating probe meter. If the drywall reads above 15-17% moisture, it is a mold risk and typically requires cutting it away 12-18 inches above the water line to ventilate and dry the cavity insidethe walls, as per IICRC S500 standards for professional water damage restoration. Given the week that has already passed and the clear signs of residual moisture, this is not a DIY job. Trapped moisture in the slab will continue to cause problems and odor. We strongly recommend a professional inspection to use thermal imaging and moisture meters to identify all affected areas. Our teams are certified and use exactly this equipment. For a proper assessment and to prevent a major mold issue, you should call our specialists at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. Delaying this will almost certainly lead to a more extensive and expensive remediation project. |
