How to dry water-damaged marble floor and prevent mold?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our ground floor apartment in Jumeirah had over an inch of water after the storm last week, and even though we’ve mopped it all up, the marble floor in our living room now has these large, dark, damp patches and feels cold and slightly soft underfoot. I'm really worried the water has seeped underneath and that we'll get mold or the tiles will crack. What's the best way to completely dry out the subfloor and save the marble, and who should I call to assess the damage properly?

The situation you describe is a serious one, common after the recent severe weather here in Dubai. An inch of water is more than enough to breach the grout lines and saturate the substrate beneath your marble tile. The dark patches indicate trapped moisture, and the softness underfoot is a major red flag that the screed (the concrete base) is compromised and losing structural integrity.
Your priority is not surface drying but extracting moisture from the subfloor. This is not a DIY job. Simply mopping and air-drying will lead to efflorescence (salt deposits), mold growth within the walls and subfloor, and ultimately, the marble tiles cracking or delaminating as the weakened screed shifts. You need professional intervention immediately. The correct procedure involves using industrial-grade dehumidifiers (like desiccant or LGR models) and air movers specifically placed to create a drying chamber. Technicians use moisture meters, including invasive probes, to measure the moisture content in the screed and determine the precise drying time required. They may also need to carefully remove a few tiles to facilitate drying and assess the substrate's condition. Do not delay. For a proper assessment and immediate remediation to save your flooring and prevent mold, which is a health hazard and violates Dubai Municipality's public health regulations, you must call a certified specialist.
