How to find and fix closet moisture source?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Mirdif villa has started to feel damp, and some of our winter jackets have these faint dark spots on them. We run the AC constantly, but I’m worried the humidity is still too high inside, especially after the heavy dew we get in the mornings. What’s the best way to find the source of this moisture and get a proper inspection to stop it from spreading to the rest of our clothes?

Closet moisture in Dubai villas often comes from high indoor humidity condensing on cooler surfaces, like exterior walls. Mirdif's heavy morning dew exacerbates this. The dampness and spots on your jackets are strong indicators of a mold-conducive environment.

First, check for obvious issues: ensure the AC unit serving that room is draining properly—a clogged condensate drain line is a common culprit. Feel the closet's interior walls; a noticeably colder surface suggests insufficient insulation, which causes condensation. Look for any cracks in the exterior wall or around windows that might be letting humid air seep in.

For a definitive answer, a professional inspection is your best course. They use moisture meters to pinpoint elevated dampness levels within walls and thermal imaging cameras to identify cold spots (thermal bridges) where condensation occurs unseen. This is critical in Dubai's climate, where year-round AC use creates a constant battle against indoor humidity. The inspection should also include an assessment of your villa’s overall ventilation and AC performance, as an oversized or underperforming unit may not be dehumidifying the air effectively.

Do not attempt to clean the mold on the jackets until the moisture source is fixed, as it will just return. Once the root cause is addressed, a proper remediation protocol can be implemented to clean the affected materials and prevent recurrence.
