how to find and fix damp smell in dubai closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our villa in Jumeirah has started to smell really damp, especially since the weather got more humid. I pulled out some winter clothes from the back and found a few jackets with small black spots on them. We run the AC constantly, but it doesn't seem to help this one area. What's the best way to find and fix the source of this moisture for good?

The damp smell and black spots in your Jumeirah villa closet point to a localised moisture source, which is common here due to our high humidity and constant AC use creating temperature differentials. First, move everything out to inspect the closet thoroughly. Check for a slow leak from an adjacent bathroom pipe or a crack in the wall allowing ground moisture to seep in, especially if it's on an exterior or ground-floor wall.

Often, the issue is condensation. The cold back wall of the closet might be an uninsulated exterior wall where the AC's cold air meets the outside heat, causing condensation to form unseen behind your clothes. This creates the perfect damp environment for mould. Feel the walls for cold spots or moisture. Running a dehumidifier in the room for a few days can help, but it won't fix the root cause.

For a persistent damp smell and visible growth, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact moisture source and mould type. In Dubai, remediation must follow DHA and DM guidelines for occupant safety. A proper assessment uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the condensation point or leak. They can then advise on fixes like improving ventilation, adding insulation to the cold wall, or repairing a leak. Since the mould is already on fabrics, dry cleaning may not remove the spores; some items may need professional decontamination.
