How to find and prevent mold in Dubai closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started to get a really strong, damp smell, especially on my leather bags and shoes. I first noticed it a couple of weeks ago, and even after airing everything out, the smell comes back within a day. I'm worried it's hidden mold from the humidity. What's the most effective way to find the source of the mold in the closet and what can I do to prevent it from coming back for good?

That damp, musty smell returning to your closet is a classic indicator of active mold growth, likely due to Dubai's high humidity levels. The source is often hidden condensation from an AC unit's cold air meeting warm, humid air, or a small, unnoticed water leak.

Start by emptying the closet completely. Inspect the walls, ceiling, and floor, especially corners and behind shelves, for visible discoloration, fuzzy patches, or water stains. Use your nose to pinpoint the strongest odor, which often leads you right to the source. Check if an AC vent or chilled water pipe runs inside or directly behind that wall, as these are common culprits for condensation. In villas, also inspect the exterior wall for any cracks in the rendering that could be letting moisture in.

To prevent recurrence, you must control humidity. A standalone dehumidifier placed inside the closet is the most effective immediate solution. Ensure the room's AC is running consistently, as it acts as a dehumidifier; never turn it off completely for extended periods. Improve air circulation by not overpacking the closet and occasionally leaving the door ajar. For leather goods, use moisture-absorbing silica gel packs inside the bags and shoes.

If the smell persists after a thorough cleaning or you find extensive visible growth, a professional inspection is recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to find hidden dampness without destructive searching. A lab test of a surface sample can also identify the mold type, which informs the correct remediation protocol and ensures it's properly addressed.
