How to find and stop closet damp smell for good?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started to get a strong, damp smell, especially on my leather bags and shoes. I first noticed it a couple of weeks ago, and even after airing everything out, the smell comes back. I’m worried it’s mold growing in the walls because of the humidity. What’s the most effective way to find the source and prevent it from coming back for good?

That damp, musty smell returning to your closet is a classic indicator of active mold growth, likely hidden within the wall or on the back of the built-in cabinetry. In Dubai's high humidity, closets on exterior walls are prime spots for condensation to form unseen, feeding mold.
First, find the source. A visual inspection with a flashlight is step one; look for discoloration, warping, or water stains. The most effective method is a professional inspection using a borescope to see inside the wall cavity and a moisture meter to pinpoint elevated dampness levels that aren't visible. This identifies the exact extent without unnecessary demolition. To stop it for good, you must address the humidity. Simply airing it out won't work because you're reintroducing Dubai's humid air. For a built-in closet, ensure the AC is effectively cooling that room and that no furniture is blocking the vent, allowing cold air to circulate inside the closet. A standalone dehumidifier placed in the bedroom can help, but for a persistent issue, the root cause is often a lack of a vapor barrier in the exterior wall construction, a common finding in older villas. For remediation, if the mold is superficial, cleaning with a vinegar solution may suffice. However, if the drywall or MDF backing is saturated, the affected material must be removed and replaced by a professional team to prevent spores from spreading. To ensure it's truly gone, post-remediation verification testing through a certified microbiology lab is the only way to confirm the spore count has returned to normal levels. |
