How to fix closet humidity and mold in Dubai villa?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah Park villa has a persistent damp smell, and I just found small black spots on a couple of leather handbags and the back wall. This started a few months after winter, and even though we run the AC constantly, it feels humid in that corner. What's the most effective way to fix the humidity issue there to stop this from destroying more of our stuff?

The most effective way to fix this is to address the root cause: the high humidity and condensation specific to Dubai's climate. Constant AC doesn't always solve localized humidity issues and can sometimes create cold spots that encourage condensation.

First, immediately remove the affected items and wipe the wall with a dilute vinegar solution to address the surface mold. For leather goods, consult a specialist for cleaning. Then, identify the moisture source. In villas, this is often poor insulation on an exterior wall, especially after the cooler winter months when the temperature differential between the outside heat and the chilled interior wall is highest, causing condensation inside the closet. A hidden plumbing leak from an adjacent bathroom is another common culprit.

To manage it yourself, ensure the closet isn't overpacked to allow for air circulation. A standalone dehumidifier or a rechargeable desiccant pod inside the closet can help reduce moisture. Check that the room's AC vent isn't blocked by furniture and is blowing strongly; weak airflow allows humid air to stagnate.

For a persistent issue that is damaging property, a professional inspection is recommended. They use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact location of the condensation and moisture meters to quantify the problem. This identifies whether the solution requires better insulation, fixing a leak, or adjusting your HVAC system's balance to improve dehumidification in that room. Verifiable data from the inspection will confirm the cause and the most effective remediation method.
