How to handle black mold in Bur Dubai bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some clothes. It must have been there a while because the wall feels a bit damp and the room has a weird stale smell. We’re in an older building in Bur Dubai and I’m really worried about it spreading. What’s the best way to handle this properly, and should I call a professional company or is it something I can tackle myself with products from ACE?

That damp patch behind your clothes is a classic sign of condensation and hidden moisture, very common in older Bur Dubai buildings. The stale smell confirms active microbial growth.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water or use a diluted bleach cleaner from ACE. Scrub the area thoroughly, let it dry completely, and discard any contaminated fabrics. However, DIY cleaning only addresses the surface mold you can see, not the moisture source.

Given the wall feels damp and the smell is present, the moisture is likely behind the wall, possibly from a small plumbing leak or, more commonly in our climate, persistent condensation from an AC unit or external humidity. This hidden moisture means the mold will almost certainly return.

A professional inspection is strongly recommended here. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the exact water source, which is critical for a permanent fix. In Dubai, remediation companies should follow international standards like IICRC S520. Proper remediation involves isolating the area, removing contaminated materials like the damp drywall, and using HEPA filtration to prevent spores from spreading to other rooms during the process. For verifiable results, the company should provide before-and-after surface or air sample lab analysis from an accredited microbiology lab.
