How to handle black mold in Dubai humidity myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black, fuzzy patches appearing on the back of our bedroom closet wall. It's the wall that faces the outside of our building in Jumeirah. I'm worried it's been spreading since the humidity started rising a couple of months ago. What's the best way to handle this ourselves, and at what point do we need to call in a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

Black, fuzzy patches on an exterior wall in Jumeirah are a classic sign of condensation-related mold, which is extremely common here due to the high humidity interacting with cold air from AC units. The wall is likely a "cold bridge," where the temperature difference causes moisture to condense inside, creating the perfect environment for mold to feed on organic materials like dust or the wallpaper paste.

For a small, contained patch (under one square meter), you can handle it yourself. First, identify and address the moisture source. Ensure your AC is not set excessively low, as the drastic temperature difference with the outdoor humidity is the core problem. A setting of 23-24°C is often sufficient to reduce condensation. Improve air circulation in the closet by not overpacking it and occasionally leaving the doors open.

To clean, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Avoid bleach, as it primarily bleaches the mold and doesn't kill the roots on porous surfaces. Instead, use a dedicated antifungal cleaner or a solution of distilled white vinegar and water. Scrub the area thoroughly and allow it to dry completely. A dehumidifier in the room can be very effective at maintaining low humidity levels and preventing recurrence.

You should call a professional remediation company if the affected area is larger than one square meter, if the mold returns quickly after cleaning, or if you suspect it has spread inside the wall cavity. Professionals use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to find the full extent of the hidden moisture and growth, which is often much greater than what's visible. For rental properties, notify your landlord immediately, as structural moisture issues are typically their responsibility to rectify.
