How to handle black spots on interior wall ourselves?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind our sofa in the living room. It’s an interior wall, and with the AC blasting all the time, I’m worried the humidity is trapped there. What’s the best way to handle this ourselves before calling a professional company?

Move the sofa away from the wall immediately to allow air to circulate. In Dubai, interior walls can develop condensation from the extreme temperature differential between a cold, air-conditioned room and the hot, humid air trapped behind large furniture. This creates a perfect breeding ground for mould.
For a small area, a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water is effective for surface cleaning. Apply it with a spray bottle, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush and wipe dry. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can push the mould deeper into porous materials like drywall or paint. After cleaning, use a fan or dehumidifier to ensure the wall is completely dry to the core to prevent rapid regrowth. This is a temporary measure if the mould is only on the surface. If it has penetrated the paint or drywall, or if the area is larger than one square meter, professional assessment is needed. The wall cavity itself may have a more serious moisture issue that requires specialized equipment to diagnose and remediate properly to prevent it from returning. |
