How to handle hidden black mold in Dubai villa?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It must have been growing slowly for a while, but I only spotted it today while reorganizing. The wall feels slightly damp to the touch, and I'm really worried it's spread inside the wall. What's the most effective way to handle this kind of hidden mold issue in Dubai's climate?

Stop using the AC in that room immediately to prevent spreading spores. The damp wall suggests a leak, likely from a pipe in the wall or condensation from an AC duct, which is common here. Mold behind walls in Dubai villas often requires professional assessment, as the high humidity allows it to spread extensively unseen.

For a confirmed hidden problem, DIY is not advised. The most effective approach is a professional inspection using a borescope to see inside the wall cavity and moisture meters to find the water source. Dubai Municipality guidelines require remediation to address the root cause, not just wipe the surface.

Reputable remediation involves isolating the area with containment barriers, removing affected drywall or insulation, HEPA vacuuming, and treating the cavity with antimicrobial solutions. After removal, a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the space is truly clean.

Until you get a pro, keep the area ventilated and move any belongings away from the damp wall. Resolving the moisture intrusion is critical; otherwise, the mold will return quickly in our climate.
